PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is a vacuum coating process. Inside a high vacuum chamber, a target material (usually titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride, or chromium nitride) is vaporised and deposited onto the steel surface, literally one atom at a time. The coating ends up being 0.17 µm to 3.0 µm thick, and unlike paint or plating, it doesn't just sit on the surface. It bonds into the steel itself at a metallurgical level.
Here's what that means practically:
- Scratch resistance: the coating is harder than the base steel itself
- Chemical resistance: sweat, moisture, mild acids, cleaning agents — none of it affects the surface
- Colour stability: UV resistant, no fading or yellowing even after 10+ years outdoors
- Clean process: no heavy metals, no hazardous waste; far greener than electroplating
- Tight tolerances: the coating is thin enough that it doesn't change the sheet's dimensions
