ASTM A106 Grade B specification covers carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. These pipes are suitable for bending, flanging, welding and similar forming operations. Mechanical testing of the specimens shall include bending, flattening, tensile, hydrostatic and nondestructive electric tests. Specimens undergo bending tests shall consist of sections cut from a pipe. For flattening tests, the specimens shall be smooth on the ends & burr-free, except when made on crop ends. All tests shall be performed in room temperature. If any test specimen shows flaws it can be discarded and substituted for another test specimen. Before testing, if a specimen has scribe scratches, a retest shall be allowed.

What is A106 Pipes

A106 Pipe is the black carbon steel pipe (killed carbon steel pipe) for high-temperature and high-pressure service. These A106 Seamless Pipes are available in three grades A, B, and C of varying strength. ASTM/ASME A-106/SA-106 grade seamless pipes is one of our most widely used grade of carbon steel and is readily available ex-stock for all standard thicknesses up to SCH160. NPS 1-1/2 and under may be either hot finished or cold drawn. NPS 2 and larger shall be hot finished unless otherwise specified. Surface finish standards are outlined in the specification. ASTM A106 Grades A and ASTM A106 B are obtainable in most sizes and schedule numbers, SA106 Grade B permits higher carbon and manganese contents than Grade A. The A106 Grade B Pipe supplied by ASTM Seamless Pipes has a maximum carbon content of 0.23%.

Hydrostatic Testing Inspection test pressures produce a stress in the pipe wall equal to 60% or specified minimum yield strength (SMYS) at room temperature. Maximum Pressures are not to exceed 2500 psi for NPS 3 and under and 2800 psi

for the larger sizes. Pressure is maintained for not less than 5 seconds.
Permissible Variations in Weights per Foot Weight of any length shall not vary more than 10% over and 3.5% under that specified.
NOTE -- NPS 4 and smaller -- weighed in lots. Larger sizes -- by length

Lengths required shall be specified on order. No "jointers" permitted unless otherwise specified.
If no definite lengths required, following practice applies:
Single Random -- 16' - 22'. 5% may be 12' - 16'

Carbon steel is a large category of steel that encompasses many varying chemical compositions. Each type of carbon steel requires different considerations when welding. For example if you choose Low carbon steel to weld which is typically the most readily welded steel in a room temperature environment. These low carbon steel suitable for welding include C1008, C1018, A36, A1011 and A500. Medium carbon steel such as C1045 typically requires preheat and post-heat treatment to avoid weld cracking. High carbon steel is even more prone to weld cracking than the other two groups of carbon steel. Welding high carbon steel will most likely require very thorough preheating and post-heating processes to avoid this. It could also require special welding filler metals.

ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe welding is used extensively for pipe welding, aerospace, aviation, biomedical implants, fabrication of race cars, choppers, etc.

ASTM A53 is Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated, Welded and Seamless.
ASTM A106 is Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service.

A53 Pipe vs A106 Pipe – (2) Applied Type of Pipe

A 53 can be welded seam or seamless depending on how it is specificed for purchase. It is a general steel pipe spec and covers galvanized pipe as well as black pipe.
A106 is a similar pipe in chemical composition but is intened for high temperature service (up to 750 Degs F). It is a seamless pipe.
At least in the US, there is usually A53 for welded pipe while A106 is seamless. If you ask for A53 in the US they will quote A106 as an alternate.

For example when we compare between A106-B and A53-B seamless from chemical composition point of view, we find that :
1. A106-B contains silicon, min. 0.10% where A53-B has zero%, and silicon is the important element for improving the heat resistance criteria.
2. A106-B contains manganese 0.29-1.06%, where A53-B 1.2%.
3. A106-B contains low sulfur and phosphorus, max. 0.035% where A53-B contains 0.05 and 0.045% respectively.
